My Christmas Cactus

This is kind of a strange post, I know.... but I just had to share it. Back in 2004, my sweet grandmother passed away. She was my last living grandparents and it was quite sad for me. She had lived in Mississippi, and my family made the "trek" over to MS to clean out her retirement home apartment. As you all know, I do love plants, and she had a Christmas Cactus sitting in her long window. (If I remember correctly, she loved plants, in fact, both of my grandmothers did, which is why I think I like them so much, too.) Anyway, I really couldn't throw out this plant, so I decided to take it all the way home to Texas with me.
For years now, it really has not been a very "happy" plant. I've fertilized it and "baby-ed" it and tried to make it really shine, but it just didn't seem to be happy. Well, for some reason, it decided to go crazy this January. I do know that Christmas Cactus plants are much happier in the winter and the house temperature has to be below a certain degree in order for it to bloom. With this cold winter, (and I feel like our house is always freezing) - I have a beautiful, blooming Christmas Cactus in our family room. It is at least 6 years old. Who knows how long she had it before I started caring for it? I would love to know. I'll have to ask her someday :)
